Today is my dad’s birthday. I have been reflecting on him and how fortunate I feel to have him as my dad, so I thought I would share a few of his qualities that make him so dear to me.
- He has a great, dry (sometimes warped) sense of humor. He often comes up with little quips that have my sister and me laughing. He also wears what seems like an endless array of t-shirts and sweatshirts he got at a local thrift store that have squirrels and funny sayings. He seems to debut a new one from time to time to keep everyone amused.
- He listens and has a great memory. If someone in the family needs to remember something (like, “don’t let me go home without this dish”), we tell my dad and he never fails to remind us.
- He loves a good mystery and British TV shows – my sister and I inherited these loves too.
- Children and our pets gravitate toward him – they somehow know his gentleness and kindness.
- He takes on others’ cares as his own – small and big. If you mention some small care in a conversation, he remembers it and asks you about it the next time you talk. Or, if it something he has in his “store”, he will offer it freely to you, often with a choice between more than one option. More seriously, when my mom had a health crisis a couple of years ago, he was extremely devoted to being there for her in every way, no matter the long drive, a blizzard or whatever.
- He’s passionate about his hobbies such as the circus model builders, trains, etc.
I could go on and on – generous spirit, work ethic, wisdom, humility.
He’s made of great stuff. And I’m so grateful he’s my dad.
