Close Encounters of the Hairy Kind

Today was a marvelous autumn day in Glasgow – of a kind that has been quite rare. Mostly, that means it didn’t rain much of the day. And not only did it not rain at all, but it was gloriously sunny for hours on end. It felt like I could have been in the Mediterranean. Temps were in the mid-50’s.

When the sun comes out here in Glasgow, especially in these days of increasing darkness, you have to drop whatever you’re doing and get out and worship it. It may only last a minute. Today was a treasure of many minutes.

D. and I headed out to a nearby park that we embarrassingly hadn’t yet visited called Dawsholm Park only about a twenty-minute walk away. It was once a large estate but was purchased by the city about 100 years ago.

I had heard that there were some Highland cattle there, but didn’t have much hope of finding them amid the sprawling 81 acres. However, we got really lucky.

Highland cows or “coos” as they would say here

On our first pass through the park, we saw a meadow and came upon these lovelies. They were pretty far away in the pasture, so we watched them a bit and moved on on this inviting path for other magical delights.

Beautiful late autumn color
Scotland does moss very well.

As we looped back, we stopped by the pasture again and to our surprise the cows were right by the fence.

Look at this beauty!

A lovely Glaswegian man had brought a bag of carrots and was feeding them. The finicky girl above passed up the carrots at the same time as keeping her sister from getting any – a bit cheeky.

An oasis in the city

We had a really nice time talking to the man – he was very Glaswegian in the ways that endear you to this city’s residents – full of humor, chatty, down to earth, easy-going and welcoming.

Here’s one of the girls in action – if you listen you can hear some lovely Glaswegian in the background. 🙂
She’s a looker, isn’t she?

It was such a nice experience – the sun, the beautiful animals and the connection with a kind Glasgow man who even took time to give us some tips on some local attractions we shouldn’t miss.

Little robin (same name but different than our robins). Our friend said they come along for any treats the cows leave behind.

Hope you’re finding the sweet treasures in your day. Sending you warm, sunny Glaswegian greetings.
