Ships, Trains, and Automobiles

It’s very exciting to have my dad as our first visitor here in Glasgow!

On our first full day in Glasgow, we visited the Riverside Museum, which sits along the Clyde River, the storied waterway that was the lifeblood to the city as an industrial and trading hub over centuries.

The museum, built in 2011, is housed in a massive, modern building designed by British-Iraqi architect and designer Zaha Hadid.

It has over 3,000 objects in its collection – from skateboards to train engines. There are lots of ship models, bicycles, trams, stagecoaches, subway cars, fire engines and cars. They also had a Victorian street set up with a horse-drawn trolley and little shops outfitted with special tools like a saddlery, shoemaker and photographer.

Those shelves on the back right may look like Matchbox cars – but those are real, full-sized cars! And in the front, trams and train engines.

The city runs the award-winning museum and it’s free – such a great place to take kids and those interested in history.

Old bakery truck very cleverly fitted with those vented panels in back.
Old subway car – inside there were some nice Victorian glass panels.
Dad next to a trolley. The woodwork inside was really lovely.

Hope that you get wherever you’re going in style!

  1. You did it!!! So glad you have your dad there to show around and show off. What a great experience for him. I know you’ll both never forget the time he visited Glasgow and his little girl♥️

  2. You made someone from Reading very happy! I took my smart phone to our Oldsters’ luncheon last week so we could all see the post. Good to see your dad in Scotland!
