Left is the New Right (or Maiden Voyage to Loch Lomond)

It’s been ages since I’ve last posted a blog. Some of you know it’s been a few months of family upheaval and to be honest I just haven’t been in the best mental space. Also, adventures have been few.

I thought I’d resume the blog with a celebratory posting on a recent wee trip to Loch Lomond.

Scotland is a country full of lakes (lochs) and the closest sizable lake to Glasgow is Loch Lomond, with the nearest point only about 16 miles away. It’s a stunning place surrounded by hills, beautiful lookout points, and charming villages.

The weather was moody, but the view around Lake Lomond was still beautiful.

We had visited the village of Balloch along Loch Lomond before, via train, but what made this visit particularly special was that it was my first trip there via car and I was the licensed driver operating the car!

It’s been quite a long process to get my UK driver’s license, something I initially thought I would complete in my first year here. First, I had to wait half a year to gain residency, then take the “written test”, then I opted for lessons with an instructor to feel confident on the road and, just recently, the road test. All these steps were quite drawn out with delays at each step due to post-pandemic backlogs. Now, I’m official. Woo hoo!

Our maiden voyage in a car-share hybrid.

We don’t have a car, so we signed up for a car-share service and found it very easy to use.

My reward for navigating a total of 7 traffic circles on the way to Balloch (yes, that means, sigh, 14 round trip) was a delightful break from the cityscape – with fall color, scenic lake views and fantasies of fairy life in the mossy undergrowth.

Small boats offer cruises on the lake.
Mossy home for gnomes?

Here’s hoping you find courage to meet the hard stuff in life and some enchantment wherever you roam.

  1. Beautiful photos! Congrats on getting your license. Did you take the high road or the low road? (that song is now an earworm). I’m impressed by your having navigated traffic circles driving on the left side of the road. When a friend & I drove there, the first 1 we encountered, she panicked & drove into the center of the circle, providing entertainment for the locals. There was a problem adjusting when we returned to the continent.

    1. Hi Gloria, Thanks for sharing your own experience with traffic circles – what a funny image of your friend going to the center of the circle and likely a bit scary at the time. I took the low road this time 🙂 – hope to head to the Highlands sometime soon.

  2. Swooz! So now you’re a world-class driver. Congratulations! 🎈the pictures are beautiful. I’m so happy you share your world. Then I can live vicariously through your adventures. ♥️

  3. I finally got back to this post! Congratulations on obtaining your driver’s license and being fearless in tackling the traffic circles. The shots were beautiful. Hope your stay in good, old Berks County was productive. Marlene

  4. I really enjoy your posts. The scenery and photography are beautiful.
    Congrats on your driver’s license.
